The entire FIKOM UG academic community extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Rizky Wulan Ramadhani, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom., a lecturer in Communication Studies at Universitas Gunadarma, on successfully earning her Doctorate in Communication Studies with cum laude honors.
This achievement marks an important milestone in her academic journey and reflects her commitment to advancing knowledge through research that addresses social and communication issues within the context of family law.
EXAMINING SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE IN MARRIAGE DISPENSATION APPLICATIONS
As part of her academic journey, Dr. Rizky Wulan Ramadhani, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom. successfully defended her dissertation entitled:
“The Reproduction of Symbolic Violence and the Logic of Emo-Truth in Marriage Dispensation Applications in Cirebon Regency and Cirebon City.”
The research examines the issue of child marriage from a communication studies perspective by exploring how social realities, language, emotions, and structures of meaning play a role in the process of applying for marriage dispensations.
This study is significant because child marriage should not only be viewed as a legal and social issue, but also as a communication phenomenon involving processes of meaning-making, legitimation, and the reproduction of values within society.
REVEALING HABITUS AND DOXA THAT NORMALIZE CHILD MARRIAGE
One of the key findings of this research concerns the presence of habitus and doxa in the normalization of child marriage.
Habitus refers to dispositions, experiences, and ways of perceiving the world that are shaped through social life. Doxa, meanwhile, refers to beliefs or understandings that have become accepted as natural or self-evident and are therefore rarely questioned.
Through this perspective, the research demonstrates that decisions and arguments surrounding child marriage do not emerge independently, but are closely connected to social structures and systems of meaning that develop within communities.
This approach provides a deeper understanding of how social practices can continue to be reproduced through deeply rooted language, beliefs, and patterns of thought.
EMO-TRUTH AND AGGRO-TRUTH IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF LEGITIMACY
Dr. Rizky’s research also identifies the role of emo-truth and aggro-truth narratives in constructing legitimacy within marriage dispensation applications.
In this context, emotions are not merely personal expressions; they can also become part of the process through which a particular reality is constructed and presented as convincing to others. Narratives grounded in emotional experiences can influence how an issue is understood, framed, and considered during decision-making processes.
The study demonstrates that communication within legal settings involves not only formal arguments, but may also be influenced by emotional narratives and the social constructions surrounding them.
CONTRIBUTING TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEORY
In addition to providing a deeper understanding of child marriage, the research makes an academic contribution through its application and development of theoretical perspectives.
The findings enrich the interpretation of Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework, particularly the concepts of habitus, doxa, and symbolic violence within the context of communication and social practices.
At the same time, the study extends the application of Jayson Harsin’s concept of emo-truth by bringing it into the context of family law proceedings. This perspective opens further avenues of inquiry into the relationships among emotion, truth, communication, legitimacy, and decision-making within social institutions.
Thus, the dissertation not only examines a significant social phenomenon but also offers theoretical perspectives that can be further developed in future communication research.

Research on child marriage is relevant to a wide range of fields, including communication, law, family studies, child protection, and social policy. Through a communication perspective, research can help explain how language, values, emotions, and social relationships contribute to shaping practices within society.
This also demonstrates the broad scope of Communication Studies in critically and multidisciplinarily examining complex social issues.
