FIKOM FUN FACT: BODY LANGUAGE SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS
Hello, Fikomers!
Did you know that in face-to-face communication, words are not the only determinant of meaning? In fact, words make up only a small portion of the overall communication process.
Based on research by Albert Mehrabian, human communication is influenced by three main elements:
- 7% from words (verbal),
- 38% from intonation and tone of voice (vocal),
- 55% from body language (nonverbal).
These findings show that how we speak and behave often matters more than what we say.

When the Body “Speaks” More Honestly
Hand gestures, facial expressions, posture, and eye contact play a crucial role in conveying true meaning. When verbal messages do not align with body language, people tend to trust the visible nonverbal signals more.
This is why someone may appear unsure, insincere, or highly confident, even when their words sound neutral.
The Importance of Body Language in Everyday Life
Understanding body language helps us to:
- become more sensitive and empathetic communicators,
- deliver messages more honestly and convincingly,
- avoid misunderstandings in social interactions,
- and improve communication effectiveness in class, organizations, and the workplace.
For Communication Studies students, the ability to read and use body language is not just an added skill, it is a vital competency for building relationships and delivering messages holistically.
Be More Mindful in Communicating
From now on, pay attention not only to what you say, but also to how your body communicates it. Because in communication, the strongest messages are often the ones left unspoken.
