FIKOM UG HOLDS MOU AND FGD ON OBE-BASED COMMUNICATION SCIENCE CURRICULUM IN THE ERA OF AI AND DIGITAL SOCIETY
The Faculty of Communication Sciences, Gunadarma University, has held a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) together with LAMSPAK, PERHUMAS, ASPIKOM, and ISKI. The event carried the theme “Revitalizing the Communication Science Curriculum Based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) in the Era of Artificial Intelligence, Sustainability, and Digital Society.”
The event, which took place on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 09.00 a.m. to 04.00 p.m. WIB at the Auditorium of Campus F8, Gunadarma University, Depok, served as a strategic meeting forum among higher education institutions, accreditation bodies, professional associations, and scholarly organizations in the field of communication. Through this event, FIKOM UG sought to strengthen institutional cooperation while also opening an academic dialogue on the direction of communication science curriculum development that is more adaptive to the changing times.
The implementation of the MoU became an important part of building synergy among institutions. The collaboration was not only aimed at strengthening institutional relations, but also at improving the quality of education, research, community service, and academic and professional networks in the field of communication science. Collaboration with LAMSPAK, PERHUMAS, ASPIKOM, and ISKI is expected to make a real contribution to strengthening the communication education ecosystem in Indonesia.
In addition to the signing of the cooperation agreement, the event continued with a Focus Group Discussion that discussed curriculum revitalization based on Outcome-Based Education. OBE is an important approach in higher education because it places graduate learning outcomes as the foundation for designing the educational process. Through this approach, the curriculum is not only developed based on teaching materials, but also on the competencies, skills, attitudes, and practical abilities that students must possess after completing the learning process.
The revitalization of the communication science curriculum has become increasingly important amid the development of Artificial Intelligence, sustainability issues, and the transformation of digital society. These changes directly affect the way people communicate, produce information, use media, build social relations, and make decisions in public life. Therefore, communication science education needs to continuously adapt so that its graduates are able to understand the dynamics of media, technology, digital culture, and the needs of industry and society.
In the era of Artificial Intelligence, communication science students are not only required to be able to use technology, but also to understand the social impacts, ethics, and communication responsibilities in digital spaces. The presence of AI creates new opportunities in content production, data analysis, communication strategies, digital media, and communication research. However, this development also requires academic readiness in building digital literacy, critical thinking skills, and ethical understanding of technology use.
Sustainability issues have also become an important concern in the development of the communication science curriculum. Communication plays a strategic role in building public awareness, encouraging behavioral change, strengthening social responsibility, and communicating environmental, social, and governance issues more effectively. Therefore, the communication science curriculum needs to provide space for students to understand how communication can contribute to sustainable development.
Meanwhile, the development of digital society requires communication science graduates to have adaptive abilities in responding to changing patterns of social interaction. Digital society is characterized by the rapid flow of information, the increasing use of social media, the growth of participatory culture, and the emergence of challenges such as disinformation, opinion polarization, and digital communication ethics. This condition places communication education in an important position in preparing graduates who are not only technically skilled, but also socially sensitive and ethically responsible.
The event featured Prof. Dr. M. R. Khairul Muluk, M.Si., Chair of the Executive Board of LAMSPAK, as the keynote speaker. His presence played an important role in enriching perspectives on the direction of higher education development in communication science, particularly in relation to quality, learning outcomes, and the need for curriculum adjustment amid changes in the academic and professional environment.
The FGD also presented a number of speakers from academic and professional backgrounds, namely Dr. Emilia Bassar, M.Si., IAPR; Prof. Dr. Atwar Bajari, M.Si.; and Prof. Dr. Anang Sujoko, S.Sos., M.Si., D.Comm. Their presence was expected to provide comprehensive perspectives on the development of the communication science curriculum from various angles, ranging from academic needs, professional practice, and the development of the communication industry to the global challenges faced by higher education.
Through this discussion forum, FIKOM UG sought to gather input, ideas, and recommendations that could be used to strengthen the communication science curriculum. Discussion on curriculum is important because the world of education cannot stand apart from social and technological changes. The curriculum needs to be continuously evaluated so that it remains relevant, responsive, and able to answer the needs of students, the world of work, society, and the development of knowledge.
The MoU and FGD also reflected FIKOM UG’s commitment to improving the quality of higher education implementation. By strengthening cooperation with institutions and associations in the field of communication, FIKOM UG hopes to build broader collaborative spaces in academic development, the improvement of lecturer and student competencies, research strengthening, and the development of programs that are relevant to future needs.
FIKOM UG views that communication science education must be able to produce graduates who are communicative, critical, creative, adaptive, and responsible. Communication science graduates are not only expected to work in the media and communication industries, but also to contribute to building a society that is more informed, inclusive, and ethical amid digital transformation.
Through this event, FIKOM UG reaffirmed its commitment to continuously developing a communication science education ecosystem that is excellent, competitive, and relevant to the challenges of the era of Artificial Intelligence, Sustainability, and Digital Society. The academic and institutional collaboration established through this event is expected to become a sustainable step in strengthening the quality of education, expanding networks, and encouraging the emergence of new ideas for the development of communication science in Indonesia.
