The entire academic community of the Faculty of Communication Science, Universitas Gunadarma, extends its warmest wishes on the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
Eighty-one years of independence mark an important occasion to commemorate the struggles of our predecessors and reflect on the nation’s journey in giving meaning to independence. The freedom we enjoy today was achieved through struggle, sacrifice, unity, and a shared determination to establish Indonesia as an independent and sovereign nation.
In the spirit of “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia,” this Independence Day commemoration reminds us that every generation has a responsibility to continue the nation’s struggle by contributing through its respective fields and competencies.
INDEPENDENCE AS AN INSPIRATION TO KEEP CREATING
The meaning of independence extends beyond commemorating a historical event. Independence also provides every citizen with the opportunity to learn, develop their potential, create innovations, and contribute to society.
Amid rapid social change and technological advancement, Indonesia needs a generation capable of thinking critically, adapting to change, creating innovative solutions, and demonstrating genuine concern for the surrounding community.
For members of the academic community, the spirit of independence can be embodied through education, research, community service, and meaningful work that responds to the nation’s needs and challenges.
THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION IN PRESERVING UNITY
As members of a diverse society, communication professionals and scholars have a strategic role in maintaining a healthy public sphere and strengthening national unity.
Communication is more than the process of conveying information. It also helps build mutual understanding, bridge differences, facilitate dialogue, and strengthen collaboration throughout society.
This role is increasingly important in the digital era, when information can circulate at remarkable speed. The ability to communicate positively, critically, creatively, ethically, and responsibly has therefore become essential. Media and digital literacy enable people to evaluate information carefully, prevent the spread of misleading content, and use media as a productive space for contributing to national development.
FIKOMERS: A GENERATION OF COMMUNICATORS FOR INDONESIA
As the nation’s next generation, Fikomers have a valuable opportunity to participate in Indonesia’s journey toward the future. Such contributions can begin with everyday actions: studying diligently, producing meaningful work, using media responsibly, respecting differences, and confidently expressing constructive ideas.
Communication studies also offer broad opportunities to create meaningful impact. Through journalism, public relations, digital communication, media, visual communication, research, and many other fields, Fikomers can help build a society that is better informed, more critical, inclusive, and empowered.
Ultimately, giving meaning to independence is not only about what we have received from Indonesia, but also about what we can give to Indonesia.

Indonesia has grown through the diversity of its ethnic groups, cultures, languages, traditions, and communities. This diversity is a national strength that must be continuously preserved through mutual respect and a shared commitment to unity.
Collaboration is one of the keys to addressing the nation’s various challenges. The government, higher education institutions, industries, communities, media organizations, and members of society must work together to create innovations and solutions that deliver tangible benefits.
In this spirit, the Faculty of Communication Science, Universitas Gunadarma, remains committed to contributing through education, research, community service, and the development of competent communication professionals with strong integrity.
